About Joint Plant Committee

Constituted in 1964 by the Ministry of Steel, the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) was created to regulate production, pricing, and distribution of steel in India.

After steel de-regulation in 1992, JPC transformed into a national data and analytics agency.

JPC is the only official agency authorized to collect and publish steel data in India.

Accredited with ISO 9001, JPC ensures reliable, transparent, and accurate steel statistics.

Official Notification

As per Notification S.O. 1868(E) (25 April 2025), JPC is designated as the Primary Agency under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008.

The Joint Plant Committee (JPC), under the Ministry of Steel, is mandated as a primary agency to collect, maintain, and disseminate comprehensive, accurate, and timely data on the Indian iron and steel industry under the CoS Act 2008. Its mission is to support evidence-based policy formulation and promote sustainable development of the sector through systematic data management, analysis, and research.

In fulfillment of this mission, JPC shall:

  • Maintain an updated and comprehensive database on production, consumption, prices movement, and other key industry parameters.
  • Keep detailed unit-level and geo-spatial information on iron and steel plants.
  • Monitor and analyse global and domestic steel industry trends.
  • Develop and strengthen data flow mechanisms for reliable information.
  • Undertake studies, surveys, and research entrusted by the Ministry.
  • Disseminate authenticated data and insights to stakeholders.

Through these activities, JPC reinforces its role as a trusted data and knowledge partner of the Ministry of Steel.
